Latest news: Shark Alliance Delivers European Citizens’ Plea to Spain Change Course on Shark Finning Rules

27 January 2010, Madrid: Representatives from the Shark Alliance, an international shark conservation coalition, today delivered to Spanish authorities a petition signed by over 90,000 citizens from 16 European countries urging Spain to end its opposition to improving the EU ban on finning – cutting off a shark’s fins and discarding its body at sea – and lead the EU toward a more effective finning regulation. Have you ever seen a shark during a dive in the Mediterranean? The answer is, most likely, no. This is because sharks have declined dramatically in this sea: 42% of the shark and ray species in the area are now at risk of extinction. The Mediterranean is the most dangerous sea in the world… if you are a shark! And yet Europe still fishes for vast amounts of endangered sharks every year.

Sharks need us. Let’s give them a… fin! This August we want to reach out to divers, let them know the dire situation of sharks in our seas, and ask them to join us in our battle to defend them.

  • Do you work in a dive centre? Please organize one or more dives dedicated to sharks, under the slogan “Dive for Sharks”!
  • Are you a diver? Promote Dive for Sharks among your friends, your dive club, the dive centers you visit this summer. And sign the online petition!

Dive for Sharks is a dive dedicated to promoting awareness of sharks and the need to protect them, organized by dive centres across the Mediterranean sea, on one or more days in August 2009.

The aim of Dive for Sharks is to involve the highest number of divers and collect their signatures in the new Shark Alliance petition, that urges Spain – the EU’s top shark fishing nation – to fish more responsibly.
